Desk limits and the lighter model
Desk’s limits are dollar limits on what its answers cost, counted per trader. The full model has a daily limit, which resets at midnight New York time, and a monthly one, which resets on the 1st (New York time). All traders also share one monthly total. At the server’s present settings that is $1 a day and $10 a month for you; the server can change them, and Desk does not show what you have left. A day also holds at most 200 questions, and a question counts once however many steps its answer takes.
When you pass the daily or monthly limit, or the shared total runs out, Desk keeps answering with a lighter model and says so in a small line above the reply:
- Daily: “Daily limit for Desk’s full model reached. A lighter model wrote this reply, and the full model is back at midnight New York time.”
- Monthly: “Monthly limit for Desk’s full model reached. A lighter model wrote this reply, and the full model is back on” the 1st of next month (such as “November 1”).
- Shared total: “Desk’s full model is off until” the 1st of next month, “so a lighter model wrote this reply.”
The lighter model has its own, smaller daily limit. When that is spent too, Desk refuses until midnight New York time (“Desk’s daily limit is reached. It resets at midnight New York time.”). If the server has no lighter model, Desk refuses as soon as the full model’s limit is reached, with that message for the daily limit and “Desk’s monthly limit is reached. It resets on the 1st.” for the others.
