Workspaces

A workspace is a tab of docked panels around one symbol. Use it to look at an underlying (the chain, the risk graph, a price chart and your modeled legs) before you have a trade, or while you compare ideas, without opening a trade page for each. Nothing is saved to the Journal until you commit.

If you use thinkorswim, a workspace is close to a Trade tab with an Analyze graph and a chart docked beside it. Each Tented tab has its own panels and its own symbol, so you can keep SPX, RUT and NDX open side by side.

Use a workspace to explore. Use a trade page once you have a trade to manage, even a draft.

  • A workspace belongs to no account and no trade. Its modeled legs are saved per symbol, not as a trade in the Journal. Committing from a workspace asks which account the trade goes in.
  • A trade page is one trade: its position, plan, scenarios, working orders and history. See Trades view.
  • Both show the same live chain data. The trade page’s chain sits in a drawer beside the risk graph.
  • The workspace chain has Account and Trade pickers above it, so you can look at a held trade next to the market. See Read the Pos column.
  • Keep one workspace per underlying you trade. Each tab keeps its symbol, expiration, chain view, columns and layout. Click a tab to be back where you left off.
  • Scan expirations, then model. Step through expirations in the chain, read the ATM IV and expected move on each, click a bid or ask to build the legs, and check the risk graph. Then commit to start a trade.
  • Look at the same symbol two ways. Add a second workspace on SPX with the Delta chain and keep Matrix in the first. The tabs read “SPX” and “SPX 2”.
  • Watch a held trade next to the market. Pick your account and trade in the chain’s pickers. The Pos column marks your legs while the chart and graph stay on screen.
  • Read several timeframes at once. The Charts layout opens four price charts (5m, 1h, D and W) on one symbol.
